Digital Safes
Having a safe is always a good
investment.
Having a safe is always a good investment. Most of today’s
modern safes feature electronic keypad-entry instead of the
traditional rotary combination or key lock.
An electronic keypad entry lock is much easier to use than
the old traditional lock systems. The keypad lock also offers
the added bonus of more security to your safe.
An electronic keypad lock will automatically go into
lockdown mode should it be tampered with. The lock remains idle
for a period of 5 minutes.
Aside from the added security, these types of locks are also
extremely appealing to look at. Today’s technology brings the
cool gadgets we see on movies into our own homes.
Digital electronic safe locks are not without their
drawbacks. Although they offer a much more secure environment
for your valuables, they do need power in order to run.
The electronic keypads can be run on a battery, which
generally lasts up to one year, but they can be somewhat costly
to maintain or replace.
If for some reason the owner should enter the wrong key code
combination, the lock goes into shutdown for 5 minutes which,
for some people can become annoying.
Also, if the owner ever misplaces, or forgets the
combination to the lock they will be unable to open the safe
altogether. What happens if I forget or lose the keypad
code?
Remain calm, and think through the options you may have to
access your valuables. Some models with the electronic keypad
allow for changing of the entry key code.
The information on how to access and change the digital code
for your safe will be found in the user’s manual. The user’s
manual is always provided along with the safe when you purchase
it.
If not, you may be able to obtain a copy be writing to the
manufacturer. You can use the defaults to access the key
code.
If your safe came with several pieces of instructional
papers or the manufacturer’s website has a lot of information,
you will need to take the time to look through everything for
the specific instructions you need.
Should you find that you need to contact the product
manufacturer, don’t be discouraged. Many manufacturers’ today
have websites. Usually the websites carry the information for
the products they sell, in addition to downloadable product
manuals.
Of course if one is available, you can always have the safe
serviced by a qualified and authorized technician. With the
older traditional combination locks, if you forgot the exact
number for the lock, but remembered some of the digits, you
could always substitute random numbers until you came across
the one you were missing.
The electronic keypad safes don’t allow for this type of
tampering. On some models of the digital safe, it may even be
programmed to block any and all attempts to insert random
numbers into the keypad.
The security offered by digital safes, unfortunately can be
hampered by the need for a person to remember what the key code
is. It is helpful to find an association for the code numbers
to help you to remember them.
